It does a good job of telling the story of how we got here, but doesn’t really want to address the “why” question, despite exuding a boundless optimism that the direction we’re going is “right”. There is lots more that I have missed no doubt a really really interesting book that was made into a BBC series also and definitely worth a read. And one of the many achievements of this lucid and learned book is to restore the viability of this view.

In the intervening years, a hundred popularisers, practitioners and science historians have tried to tell much the same story, each time with more up-to-date information and a more acute adcent of contemporary awareness.
